That’s okay, I’m not normal either. I’m a white, 50-something, married, heterosexual, Christian female American citizen of Scottish and Native American heritage with a college degree, a blackbelt in Taekwon-Do, a cat, and a huge dog. My worldview is not the same as yours, nor should it be. There is no “normal,” so why do we look at others who are “not us” with skepticism, fear, or distrust?
When we choose to embrace the fact that other people who are not the same as us – from their age to their skin color to their socioeconomic background and political views – are also people, we all win.
Take the time today to see other people. Open up and step back from your filters, your biases, and your predispositions, and SEE each person. It takes time and effort. It takes kindness and curiosity. And it’s the greatest gift you can give.
